Delving into New Zealand’s musical past reveals the wide breadth of talent and enterprise in its musical world. The latest batch of notables includes those who made and sold instruments, as well as composers and performers. Alfred Bowring was an Auckland piano maker, the Collier brothers established a successful music business in Whanganui which operated for over 100 years and Raffello Squarise came to Dunedin with the orchestra for the 1889 New Zealand & South Seas Exhibition, stayed on and became a prominent figure in Dunedin’s musical life.
